Member featured in American Cake Decorating Magazine!

Dianna is a self-taught hobby cake decorator, fine artist, and member of the New York City Cake Decorators who has a passion for cake decorating. She attended her first cake show last year and has become addicted to sugar (sugarcraft that is)!

At the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Cake Show, Dianna and her partner Vanessa won 1st Place with her Shrek Castle Cake Design. Dianna also won 1st place in the Non-Tiered Intermediate Division with the beautiful cake shown here. Isn't her "painting" technique stunning? Dianna's "painted porcelain" cake is also featured in the August/September issue of "American Cake Decorating" Magazine!

Orchid Class with Chef Lauri Ditunno, Cake Alchemy

Chef Lauri Ditunno's 2 Day Orchid Class was blast!! It was big fun seeing familiar faces and chatting about cake "stuff". Members learned how to create cymbidium and cattelaya orchids in a no-stress and fun environment. The first day we rolled out and cut our orchids. Lauri patiently demonstrated each orchid's creation step by step and even showed us how she makes her own gumpaste!!

The second day, we got a sneak peak at a real bridal cake tasting prior to the start of class. Lauri gave tips on dusting, painting, steaming our orchid petals, and wiring the orchid spray. It was also a pleasure to watch one of her interns decorating a wedding cake, and viewing all Lauri's lovely decorated display cakes.

Chef Lauri is a graduate of the International School of Sugar Art and has received an A.O.S. from the Culinary Institute of America in culinary arts. Her "Orchid Ambience" cake was voted one of the "50 most beautiful cakes" by Bride's Magazine.

Visit Chef Lauri's custom cake business and sugar art school, Cake Alchemy, at http://www.cakealchemy.com

Here's a great tip we learned from Lauri: Re-purpose a travel clothes steamer as an alternative to steam from a tea kettle when steaming gumpaste leaves and petals. Who knew???

July 2008 Cake of The Month

Helen is a talented cake designer whose love of cake artistry and attention to detail are evident in her wonderful "Gardens" cake featured. Wilton Cake Decorating classes completed over several years have built a solid foundation for Helen to hone her cake decorating skills. The last class in the series, Wilton Fondant & Gumpaste really sparked her interest. However, after she joined the NYC Cake Decorators, she really got started! The classes and demos have been wonderful but it is the guidance and comraderie from the fellow members which Helen finds most valuable. Helen is currently a member of I.C.E. and the NJ Cake Decorators, and she is looking forward to enrolling at the French Culinary Institute's pastry program during Summer 2009. Helen is currently building a portfolio on her website Helenscakes.net and hopes to turn this hobby into a viable business.

May 2008 Cake of the Month

Laura Penney Shamir is a novice cake decorator - she's only been at it since August 2007! On a whim, she signed up for Wilton Course I while shopping at a local Michael's Craft Store and quickly jumped into the world of cake decorating. Laura has a theater background and has always enjoyed artistic endeavors but never truly found her medium until she was introduced to fondant. Now she enjoys making cakes that look like other stuff for friends and family and even getting paid now and then!

While scouring the internet to find other cake enthusiasts, the NYC Cake Decorators Meetup was fortunate enough to have Laura find our website and join our group. Since then, Laura has had the opportunity to learn from many experts in the field including Elisa Strauss, Lori Ann Blethen, Ruth Drennan, Lauri Ditunno and Charmaine Jones. She’s now a member of ICES (International Cake Exploration Society) and an assistant organizer of the NYC Cake Decorators Meet Up Group.

Laura is working on getting her website up and running to promote Lucky Penny Cakes (www.luckypennycakes.com) but until then, her cakes can be seen on her Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25033387@N03/sets/72157604386217908/

2007 I.C.E.S. Day of Sharing in Albany, NY

Two members of the NYC Cake Decorators Meetup attended I.C.E.S. Day of Sharing (DOS) in Albany. They networked with other passionate cake decorators and really created some fabulous sugarcraft!

Don't the cookies look yummy!! The elegant draping is quite sophisticated and trendy, looks like a scrumptious chocolate bow with chocolate transfer, and I absolutely love the hibiscus! I can smell the salty smell of the beach -Summer is just around the corner!

These photos are compliments of Assistant Organizer Marisol.

Member Places 8th at ICES Mid-Atlantic Cake Show!

The Mid-Atlantic Cake Show was a fabulous event! The cakes, like this sweet cake on the left, were awesome and members raved about the quality of the sugar art on view.

The New York City Cake Decorators is especially proud of our out-of-state member Pam who placed 8th at the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Cake Show!

Pam owns a custom cake shop in PA and her cakes taste as scrumptious as they look.
