Sugar Chef's Purse Cake Tutorial

I came across this two part tutorial from Sugar Chef.  The tutorial highlights part of an actual class, which is different from a lot of tutorials on You Tube. I think there is enough great info for a savvy cake designer to duplicate on their own. Tell me what you think!

Purse Cakes are in very much demand and this type of class is a favorite in NYC Cake Decorators.  Last year we held four different purse cake classes taught by such talented cake designers as Chef Anne Heap, Pink Cake Box, Irene Likokas, Sweet Irene's, and Chef Janet Ben-Ami, Hey! Cookie.

April Fool's Day!

This photo courtesy of cake designer/member Heather.

Look carefully at the photo above. I've looked at it again and again, and if I didn't know it was a cake, I sure would not believe it!  This extraordinary cake was created by new member Heather. Heather is a trained artist, illustrator, and designer who graduated from Parsons School of Design.  She was bitten by the cake decorating bug last year.

What I find so amazing is the attention to detail right down to the embroidery appliques, folds in the "fabric" and the beading. A truly fitting confection for April Fool's Day!

Designer Bag Class is the Icing on the Cake!

This photo is courtesy of member Brian.

Who says that men can't appreciate a good fashionable bag? This fabulous cake was designed by member Brian, in our latest Designer Bag Cake class held on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Chef Janet Ben-Ami was the instructor of the class.

Brian is a member of Cake Central and joined NYC Cake Decorators to network and improve his skills. Amazing cake isn't it?

Janet Ben-Ami's Workshop Rocked!!!

Member/Instructor Chef Janet Ben-Ami shows members how to carve their designer handbag. Janet's classes have been extremely popular in NYC Cake Decorators Meetup. When not teaching, she bakes and decorates amazing cakes and cookies at Hey! Cookie in Long Island.

Janet is a master at cake carving. Shown here is her beautiful designer bag cake in progress.

The proof of Janet's talent and teaching ability is this awesome cake created by member Ines in Janet's workshop! Wow!

Janet is scheduled to teach a Hamburger and Fries Cake workshop, a Chocolate Modeling class, and we have our fingers crossed that she will do an encore Designer Bag Cake class for NYC Cake Decorators in the fall. To obtain more information about Janet's upcoming classes or NYC Cake Decorators Meetup, contact Dina at nyccakedecorators@yahoo.com. Happy Caking!

February 2010 Cake of The Month

Member Shameeka Silver-Berry has been crazy about cake decorating and sugar art ever since her wedding in 2004. Her fascination with cake decorating as a bride going about selecting her own wedding cake, soon developed into a "passion in [her] bones to make & decorate cakes".

As soon as she was able, Shameeka eagerly took all the Wilton Method cake decorating courses at her local craft store, and then further developed her skills with advanced courses with noted sugar artists such as Chef Ruth Drennan, Ruth Drennan Cakes, and Irene Likokas, The Painted Eye.

Shameeka's reputation for baking cakes that are "good to the last slice" has been earned from constantly tweaking her scratch recipes and experimenting with new flavors.

Her business, Berry Good Cakes, had a great showing at the WBLS Bridal Expo, June 2009. Brides loved the moist "home baked" taste of her cake.

In November 2009, Shameeka was commissioned to make a cake for Melanie Fionia's album release party! She has since created designer bag and designer box cakes for family and fans. Shameeka's bubbly and warm personality and great tasting cakes make a very sweet future for Berry Good Cakes!
