Cake Buzz! Ruth Drennan Cakes Moving to California!
Sad but true, Chef Ruth Drennan, Ruth Drennan Cakes, will be moving west this month! Although moving to California, Ruth will be traveling frequently back to the East Coast to conduct classes in sugar flower work and other techniques. Ruth's Cake Bling class was such a success in NYC Cake Decorators that we scheduled another class with her this Saturday, which is totally sold out! Ruth is also conducting an in depth series of classes in sugar flower work. To obtain information about the series, please contact Ruth directly at info@ruthdrennancakes.com.
Ruth has been a friend and Sponsor of NYC Cake Decorators from the very start. Our first major meetup in January 2007 was with Ruth and former partner Lauri at a cake tasting and Q&A at their cake shop, The Cake Atelier. We are very sorry to see her leave, but are grateful that we will not have to say "good-bye". In fact, we look forward to planning other Meetups with Ruth in 2011.

Cake/Cupcake Biz Roundtable Fall 2010!
We are pleased to announce that Amy DeGiulio, owner, The Sugar Flower Cake Shop, is coming on board as our new Sponsor!
For all of you who want a "nuts and bolts" discussion of what it takes to open a custom cake or cupcake business (and there are many many of you), Amy has agreed to hold a Roundtable and Q&A for us sometime late September or early October.
Amy has been in business for a few years. Besides selling her realistic sugarflowers, she also sells cakes. The Sugar Flower Shop has received much buzz, which includes but is not limited to, Weddings, The Knot, WEtv, Brides New York, and Wedding Wire. She is also a recipient of 2010 Brides Choice Award.
Amy is currently in the process of obtaining retail space, so she is in a unique position to share with us her experiences with up-to-date information on what it takes to open a custom cake/cupcake business in such a competitive market as New York City. Luckily for us, Amy is graciously willing to share and provide tips and concrete information.
Sugar Flower Cake Shop
Amy creates amazing sugar flowers. The Sugar Flower Cake Shop was featured by the STYLE Network as part of the "Art of Cakes II" wedding cake special. She was also on the Martha Stewart Show, and a culinary presenter at Macy's Flower Show.
Amy is offering gumpaste flower private classes at her studio in Manhattan. Please contact her at 917-639-3901 to set up a private class.

Need a Wedding Cake in 4 Hours?

Members braved the 99+ heat and thunderstorm yesterday and created 7 amazing cakes!
Do you think all these cakes are dummies? Think again! Many members opted to bring one or more tiers of real cake! To my knowledge, this is the first class of its kind.
Thanks Charmaine, for knocking another class out of the park!
Sweet Ashley's Meetup with NYC Cake Decorators

Lunching with Ashley Viscos yesterday was a real blast! Members braved the sun and storm to talk cake with one of the top cake designers on Food Network "Cake Challenge" and more recently TLC's "Ultimate Cake Off". In homage to Ashley's Southern roots, we chatted over ribs and po'boys at Virgils Times Square. Ashley plans to remain in the New York City vicinity until on or about August 13th. We've got our fingers crossed that she will be able to conduct a demo or class with NYC Cake Decorators before she heads home. A special thanks to member Annette Villaverde, Ladybugluggage, who surprised us all with her beautifully decorated treats.

Memoirs of a Geisha - Cake Class with Bronwen!

NYC Cake Decorators were so excited to attend the Geisha Airbrush Class with Bronwen Weber and husband Francois Long on June 6th. The event took place at University Settlement, 273 Bowery--a really great rental space! The event painstakingly coordinated by Assistant Organizer Ayana was a great success! Bronwen was thorough with her instructions and we all had time to carve and cover our cakes with fondant and to complete some airbrushing.
The completed Geisha cake shown was created by member Jade-eye. Jade-eye is a talented sculptor of clay who is really getting the hang of carving cake. Check out Jade-eye's other creations at Marzipan Dolls. She is also on Facebook.
