A Garden of Cupcakes at Cupcake Cafe

West 18th Street is full of surprises. After stopping by Paper Presentation to get inspired by lovely colored and textured fine papers, I went across the street to Cupcake Cafe to get my sugar buzz.

Love, love, love the signature piped flowers on CupCake Cafe's small and large cupcakes, and "baby" cakes.

I purchased four oversized mocha cupcakes for myself first and my family second -- I need to conduct a taste test for blog, don't I?

I poured a hot cup of coffee and eagerly began my "research". I found Cupcake Cafe's cupcakes to be delectably dense and yummy chocolate. The mocha topping was surprisingly light and not very sweet. I thought, "ok, it's time to dust off my vintage Wilton Way of Cake Decorating Volume II, whip up some buttercream, and get to piping!" - Dina

Cake Buzz: Kitchen Arts & Letters, Inc.

On the way home from a NYC Cake Decorators Meetup at the 92 Street Y, I came across Kitchen Arts & Letters, Inc., a little gem of a bookstore. I immediately swooned at rows and rows and rows of books all dedicated to the pursuit of good food and wine.

Kitchen Arts & Letters (1495 Lexington Avenue bet' 93rd an 94th Street), 212-876-5550, is the largest store in the United States that is devoted completely to books on food and wine. Some yummy books available at the store are Rose's Heavenly Cakes by Rose Levy Beranbaum; The Craft of Baking, by Karen DeMasco, and All Cakes Considered by Melissa Gray.

There were several fabulous historical books on desserts that caught my eye and it took all my strength not to whip out my wallet and make a purchase. I will be back though, with time enough to browse and plenty of room to carry home my spoils. - Dina

Cakegirls Bakery burns to the ground..How YOU can help!

I think all of us cakers were saddened to learn that the Cakegirls bakery burned to the ground on March 29th.

Each of us can help Brenda and Mary materially by going to their website Cake Girls and purchasing a Cakegirls T-Shirt. Keep them also in your thoughts and prayers to help them spiritually through this stressful time. NYC Cake Decorators Organizers will be purchasing T-shirts in support of Brenda and Mary. Why not you too?
